Seville is one of those cities that gets under your skin in an afternoon\u2026 and that\u2019s a problem when you\u2019ve only got one day: everything looks tempting and the clock (and in summer, the sun) doesn\u2019t forgive<\/strong>. The good news\u2014anyone who\u2019s in the city every day knows it\u2014is that the must-sees are concentrated along an axis from the old town to the river, and with a well-ordered itinerary you can fit them into a day.<\/p>\n\n

This is the route we recommend: real, hour-by-hour, and designed so you don\u2019t waste your only day queueing or walking in the sun more than you need to.<\/p>\n\n

Your day, in short:<\/strong> Cathedral, Giralda and Santa Cruz early in the morning; the Royal Alc\u00e1zar before lunch; a siesta or museum during the hottest hours; Plaza de Espa\u00f1a and Mar\u00eda Luisa in the afternoon; Triana and the river at sunset, and Las Setas to finish.<\/p>\n\n

Before you start: two tickets you need to book now<\/h2>\n\n

Seville is planned the opposite way to other cities: tickets first, itinerary second. The Cathedral<\/a><\/strong> (\u20ac13 online, \u20ac14 at the ticket office) and the Royal Alc\u00e1zar<\/a><\/strong> (\u20ac15.50) work with timed entry and sell out in high season. Book both online as soon as you know your date, and build your day around them. A local tip: the Cathedral has a free slot on non-holiday Sundays from 16:30 to 18:00<\/strong>, with mandatory online booking.<\/p>\n\n

Morning: the Cathedral, the Giralda and the Santa Cruz neighbourhood<\/h2>\n\n

Start early, when the stone is still cool and the streets are half empty.<\/p>\n\n

Seville Cathedral and the Giralda.<\/strong> The largest Gothic cathedral in the world, with Columbus\u2019s tomb and a bell tower\u2014the Giralda, a former Almohad minaret\u2014that you climb via ramps, not stairs. Allow around 75 minutes for the visit; the view from the top puts the whole city into perspective at a glance.<\/p>\n\n

Santa Cruz neighbourhood.<\/strong> The old Jewish quarter: whitewashed alleyways, tiled courtyards, orange trees and tiny squares. Wander without a map for a while\u2014it\u2019s literally the best thing to do here\u2014and look for the narrowest street, Callej\u00f3n del Agua, or Do\u00f1a Elvira Square.<\/p>\n\n

Midday: the Royal Alc\u00e1zar (and your first tapa)<\/h2>\n\n

Royal Alc\u00e1zar<\/a>.<\/strong> The oldest royal palace still in use in Europe: Mud\u00e9jar halls, the Courtyard of the Maidens, and gardens that are a true oasis (yes, Game of Thrones was filmed here). Give it at least an hour and a half, and in summer you\u2019ll appreciate the shade of the gardens at the time when the streets are already scorching.<\/p>\n\n

On the way out, your first tapas stop: around Santa Cruz and El Arenal you\u2019ll find classics like spinach with chickpeas, pork cheek and fried dogfish. In Seville, you eat from bar to bar\u2014and that\u2019s exactly the plan.<\/p>\n\n

Afternoon: Plaza de Espa\u00f1a and Mar\u00eda Luisa Park<\/h2>\n\n

Plaza de Espa\u00f1a.<\/strong> The monumental setting of the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition: a giant brick-and-ceramic semicircle with a canal where you can row a little boat, and the famous tiled benches\u2014one per province (finding yours is tradition). It\u2019s free<\/strong>, and at sunset it turns golden.<\/p>\n\n

Mar\u00eda Luisa Park.<\/strong> The green lung that wraps around the square: roundabouts, fountains and shade\u2014lots of shade, the best ally in summer. With kids, it\u2019s the place to let off steam between monuments.<\/p>\n\n

Sunset: Triana, the river and Las Setas<\/h2>\n\n

Cross the Isabel II Bridge<\/strong>\u2014the oldest surviving iron bridge in Spain\u2014towards Triana<\/strong>, the traditional pottery-and-flamenco neighbourhood: Triana Market, Calle Betis with its colourful fa\u00e7ades facing the river, and the ceramic shops on Calle Alfarer\u00eda. From the Triana riverbank, the postcard view of the Torre del Oro and the Giralda on the other side of the Guadalquivir is unforgettable.<\/p>\n\n

\"Wooden<\/figure>\n\n

End the day at Las Setas de Sevilla<\/a><\/strong> (Metropol Parasol), the huge wooden lattice in the centre: the walk along the upper walkway at nightfall, with the city lit up, is around \u20ac15 and it\u2019s the perfect finale.<\/p>\n\n
